The United States Embassy in Iraq has issued an urgent security alert to its citizens regarding potential attacks by local Shiite groups on American facilities and personnel.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the warning was published in an official statement on the embassy's website. The diplomatic mission noted that these groups may be planning new terrorist operations targeting US citizens and affiliated sites, with a specific emphasis on the increased risks within the Iraq Kurdistan region.

The alert follows a recent escalation in hostilities; on April 8, Shiite militias launched drone strikes targeting the Baghdad International Airport and areas housing the US diplomatic support center. Despite the reopening of Iraqi airspace following a declared ceasefire between the United States and Iran, the embassy continues to strongly advise US citizens to avoid all travel to Iraq due to the volatile security environment.

The security situation in Iraq remains complex, characterized by the persistent threat of regional proxy conflicts and the presence of various armed factions. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has maintained a firm stance on protecting its diplomatic assets and personnel in the Middle East, frequently emphasizing the need for regional stability and the deterrence of non-state actors. This latest warning underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions that continue to shape the security landscape across the region.
