Iran is awaiting a formal response from the United States to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Araghchi said Tehran had presented conditions for reopening the strategic waterway and resuming negotiations during meetings in New York. The conditions were passed to mediators, who relayed them to Washington.
“We have heard the first reaction from the US president, but nothing has yet been conveyed to us by the mediators,” Araghchi said. “We are waiting for the final position to be conveyed through the mediators, and we will decide based on that.”
Iran links reopening to conditions
He said any move to restore maritime traffic through the strait or advance negotiations would depend on the United States meeting Tehran’s terms.
“Our conditions are clear,” Araghchi said.
Iran’s proposal outlines a roadmap for restoring normal commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz within a week. It calls for Washington to release frozen Iranian assets, lift oil sanctions and end the naval blockade of Iranian ports. After those steps, the waterway could be reopened and talks on a final agreement could begin.
Trump rejects proposal
Araghchi said a negotiated settlement remained the only viable path forward, arguing that Tehran had kept diplomatic channels open.
“There will be no solution other than a negotiated one based on dignity and justice and securing the rights of the Iranian people,” he said.
The minister added that Iran would continue pursuing diplomacy while refusing to surrender its rights under pressure.
Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal, saying its terms were unacceptable despite Tehran’s stated readiness to reach an agreement.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the United States already had “total control” of the strait and accused Iran of seeking a deal because it was “losing so badly.”
On Friday, Araghchi said the strait could be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days if Iran’s conditions were met. He added that the steps required from Washington were already included in a June memorandum between the two sides.
“The choice now rests with the United States,” he said.
