Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's plane was nearly hit by a drone as it prepared to take off from Moldova on its way to Norway. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store made the statement in an interview with NRK television on Wednesday.
“His plane was nearly hit by a drone as it was about to take off from Moldova. That is the reality he faces,” Store said. The prime minister did not disclose the source of the information, the type of drone or how close it came to the presidential aircraft.
Store's remarks highlighted the security risks Zelensky faces during international trips as Russia's war against Ukraine continues. The Norwegian prime minister said he spoke with Zelensky after the Ukrainian president arrived in Norway and was struck by the pressure facing the Ukrainian leader.
“I asked him how his night had been. He said it had not been a good night because he had been on the phone receiving updates on where the missiles had landed,” Store said.
Zelensky arrived in Oslo on Tuesday evening and met with senior officials, including Prime Minister Store, Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
The talks focused on Norway's continued support for Ukraine, particularly in the areas of military aid, air defense systems and civilian assistance.
According to Store, work is continuing to identify ways to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities. He said industrial companies were examining options for supplying air defense systems to Ukraine and creating industrial solutions that would enable the country to produce such systems itself.
