Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed his representatives to establish contact with US President Donald Trump's team to discuss the details of a short-term ceasefire proposal reportedly offered by Russia for May 9.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that foreign media outlets have released information regarding this development.
"I have instructed our representatives to contact the US President's team and clarify the details of Russia's short-term ceasefire proposal. Ukraine strives for peace and is carrying out the necessary diplomatic work to truly end this war. Let's find out exactly what is being discussed—whether it is a few hours of security during the parade in Moscow or something more," Zelensky stated. He added that his ultimate goal is to achieve a long-term ceasefire and expressed readiness to work in any effective format that ensures reliable security and sustainable peace for the people.
The diplomatic outreach comes amid shifting dynamics in international mediation efforts following the start of US President Donald Trump's term in January 2025. The May 9 date holds significant historical weight in the region, marking Victory Day, which Russia traditionally celebrates with large-scale military parades in Moscow and other cities. While temporary truces have been proposed during various holidays throughout the conflict, the Ukrainian leadership continues to emphasize that any lasting settlement must be based on a comprehensive peace plan that ensures the country's long-term stability.
