Russia is not surprised by Azerbaijan's decision to suspend mutual relations with the European Parliament, as this institution consistently interferes in the internal affairs of other countries.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Russian media, that Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made these remarks during a briefing today.
"It is Baku's sovereign decision to cut all contacts with the European Parliament, and this decision is not surprising. Azerbaijan is not the only state faced with the indecency, disrespect, and direct interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states by this structure," Zakharova stated.
The Russian official further emphasized that such actions by European institutions often undermine regional stability and ignore the national interests of sovereign nations. This statement follows a formal announcement by the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan on May 1, 2026, regarding the suspension of cooperation with the European Parliament and several of its affiliated structures.
The European Parliament has frequently been a point of contention for various nations due to its resolutions on internal political matters. For Azerbaijan, the decision to halt engagement reflects a broader strategy to protect its territorial integrity and sovereign rights against external political pressure. Relations between Baku and Brussels have faced increasing strain as Azerbaijan prioritizes its independent foreign policy and regional security initiatives in the Garabagh region and beyond.
