Severe snowfall and extreme cold in Japan have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread injuries across the country.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that according to official data released by Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), at least 45 people have died due to the harsh winter conditions that began on January 20.

Agency officials stated that a total of 543 individuals sustained injuries in various accidents triggered by the adverse weather. The breakdown of the casualties includes the following details:

  • 187 people sustained serious injuries;
  • 356 people were admitted to hospitals with minor injuries.

Japan frequently experiences heavy snowfall during the winter months, particularly in regions along the Sea of Japan coast and northern prefectures. These weather patterns often lead to significant disruptions in transportation networks, including flight cancellations and highway closures, as well as localized power outages. Currently, snow removal operations and efforts to mitigate the consequences of the natural disaster are ongoing throughout the affected areas. Experts and local authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, particularly during snow removal activities on rooftops, which remain a leading cause of accidents during such periods.
