The Croatian government has declared Greenland an integral part of Denmark, advocating for a unified European approach against claims made by the United States regarding the island's status.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing TASS, Zagreb officials emphasized that NATO allies must respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "The position of the Croatian government is clear: Greenland is part of Denmark. We support a coordinated and unified European position should the US statements be realized," the government's press service stated in a release.
The statement follows an announcement by US President Donald Trump on social media, where he indicated that a 10 percent customs tariff would be imposed on several European nations—including Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France—until an agreement is reached for the "complete and final purchase" of Greenland by Washington. These tariffs are scheduled to take effect on February 1, with plans to increase them to 25 percent starting June 1. US President Donald Trump views the acquisition of Greenland as strategically vital for US national security and the deployment of the "Golden Dome" missile defense system.
However, the Croatian leadership believes that security concerns in the Arctic region can be addressed through dialogue without compromising Denmark's sovereignty. This diplomatic friction underscores the strategic importance of the Arctic, a region increasingly contested due to its natural resources and critical shipping lanes. Greenland, while a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, remains a central figure in transatlantic security frameworks, and any change to its status would require complex international negotiations and the consent of the local population.
