Construction work is currently underway to restore the Akyaka-Gyumri railway infrastructure, with completion expected within the next two to three months.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Akyaka Mayor Erdüger Toptas confirmed the development in a statement to Armenpress. He noted that the infrastructure restoration is progressing, and public tenders related to the construction have already been issued.
The ongoing construction efforts are part of broader preparations for the potential opening of the Armenia-Türkiye border. Toptas emphasized that tenders for the construction of the road connecting Akyaka to Gyumri have been finalized, and local authorities anticipate work commencing shortly. "The tender for the road construction from Akyaka to Gyumri has been announced, and we expect work to begin there as well. This is part of our government's policy to develop good neighborly and friendly relations," Toptas stated.
The Mayor expressed optimism that the opening of the Armenia-Türkiye border would yield significant economic benefits for both nations. He further highlighted that the initiative creates substantial opportunities for cooperation in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
The Akyaka-Gyumri railway line holds historical significance as a key transit point in the South Caucasus region. Efforts to normalize relations between Ankara and Yerevan have been ongoing for several years, with transport connectivity serving as a central pillar of these diplomatic discussions. The restoration of this link is viewed by regional analysts as a critical step toward enhancing regional trade and integration.
