Customs officials at the Shahtakhti border post of the Nakhchivan Main Customs Department have intercepted a significant quantity of illicit narcotics. The drugs were discovered in a heavy-duty vehicle transiting through Azerbaijan from Iran, which was transporting a shipment of mixed food products destined for the United Kingdom.
According to information provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the discovery was made during a routine inspection involving a service dog trained in narcotics detection. Upon searching the vehicle, officers identified a concealed compartment built into the underside of the truck's refrigerator unit. Inside, authorities recovered 4.5 kilograms of opium.
The Shahtakhti customs post, located in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, serves as a critical transit point for international logistics. Azerbaijan has intensified its border security measures in recent years to combat transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, utilizing advanced scanning technology and canine units to secure its transit corridors. An investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the origin and intended recipients of the shipment.
