Officers of the Fuzuli District Police Department have detained two individuals suspected of organizing large-scale illicit drug trafficking in Azerbaijan. During the operation, Telman Nasirov and Elshad Maharramov were taken into custody, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) told Operative Information Center-OMM.
Upon searching the suspects' vehicle, law enforcement officers discovered and seized 15 kilograms of marijuana and 2,970 methadone pills, a potent psychotropic substance. Preliminary investigations revealed that the detainees had entered into a criminal conspiracy with various Iranian citizens to acquire the drugs for the purpose of distribution and financial gain across different locations in the country.
A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident, and a court order has been issued to place both individuals under pretrial detention. Azerbaijan continues to intensify its efforts against cross-border drug trafficking, particularly along its southern borders, as part of a broader national strategy to combat the illegal narcotics trade and organized crime. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service regularly conduct specialized operations to intercept smuggling routes and dismantle networks linked to foreign drug cartels.
