Australian law enforcement officials have seized 2.7 tons of cocaine from an underground bunker system in Western Sydney, marking the largest drug bust in the country's history.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited reports from the BBC, the illicit shipment was discovered on June 19. The narcotics, with an estimated black-market value of 816 million Australian dollars (approximately 500 million euros), were found concealed in compartments beneath the false floors of three shipping containers located on a property in Londonderry.
Two individuals were apprehended at the scene while allegedly attempting to evade police and have been charged with possession of prohibited drugs imported illegally. Authorities stated that the cocaine was smuggled into Australia via the small town of Mission Beach in northern Queensland, acting on orders from an organized criminal syndicate.
Australia has increasingly become a target for international drug trafficking syndicates due to the high street prices for illicit substances in the country. This record-breaking operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the Australian Federal Police and border authorities to dismantle sophisticated smuggling networks that utilize remote coastal entry points and complex concealment methods to bypass national security measures.
