A landmine explosion has occurred in the village of Chardagli, located in the Aghdara district, resulting in injuries to two individuals. The incident took place while the victims were conducting humanitarian demining operations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), the victims have been identified as Elzamin Surkhayli (born 1994) and Fuzuli Mirzayev (born 1998), both employees of a non-governmental organization involved in demining efforts. The explosion was triggered by an anti-personnel mine while the individuals were performing their official duties.
The State Agency for Mandatory Health Insurance (TƏBİB) reported that Elzamin Surkhayli underwent an amputation of the right lower leg. Fuzuli Mirzayev, who sustained multiple shrapnel wounds to the anterior abdominal wall, has been evacuated to the Barda District Central Hospital. The other patient is currently receiving treatment in the emergency department, and his condition is assessed as moderate.
The liberated territories of Azerbaijan remain heavily contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance planted during the decades-long occupation. Since the end of the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020, the Azerbaijani government has prioritized large-scale demining operations to ensure the safe return of internally displaced persons to their ancestral lands and to facilitate reconstruction efforts in the region.
