US Ambassador to the European Union Andrew Puzder has stated that the organization must fulfill the terms of the trade agreement reached with the administration of US President Donald Trump. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Politico reported that the American diplomat accused Brussels of delaying the implementation of the agreement, which requires the EU to eliminate tariffs on American industrial goods and reduce barriers to US products.
Puzder noted that Washington has already fulfilled a significant portion of its obligations, reducing duties on a wide range of European goods, including automobiles and auto parts, to 15%. However, the ambassador claimed that the EU has not implemented any tariff concessions in favor of the United States over the past nine months. He highlighted that the trade deficit in goods between the US and the EU exceeded $235 billion in 2024. Puzder pointed out that while European cars, pharmaceuticals, wine, meat, dairy products, and luxury goods entered the US market with relatively low tariffs, American exporters continued to face high tariff barriers.
The ambassador also specifically criticized the European Parliament, stating that the body is attempting to introduce new conditions into the agreement, including time limits, suspension mechanisms, and security clauses. He remarked that Brussels is "trying to change the rules of the game after it has already started." This friction occurs as the administration of US President Donald Trump continues its policy of re-evaluating international trade agreements to ensure reciprocal benefits for American industries. Trade relations between the US and the EU remain a central pillar of the global economy, though they have frequently been subject to negotiations regarding industrial standards and market access.
