The administration of US President Donald Trump is developing new regulations concerning asylum applications for migrants, according to reports from international media outlets.

As reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, these proposed rules could grant immigration authorities the power to reject specific applications without conducting interviews with the applicants.

Under the proposed framework, officials from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) would be authorized to dismiss asylum applications submitted more than one year after an individual's entry into the country, provided there is a lack of documentation supporting legally recognized exceptions. In such instances, applicants would be referred to immigration court as part of deportation proceedings.

These measures are part of a broader policy by the Trump administration aimed at restricting access to the asylum system. USCIS representatives have stated that they are evaluating various options to reduce the backlog of over one million pending asylum applications. Meanwhile, human rights advocates have expressed concern that the new regulations could limit the ability of asylum seekers to explain the reasons behind delays in submitting their documentation.

The US asylum system has long been a subject of intense political debate, with successive administrations seeking to balance humanitarian obligations with border security and administrative efficiency. The current backlog of cases remains a significant challenge for the US immigration system, prompting ongoing legislative and regulatory discussions in Washington.
