The integration of artificial intelligence into autonomous systems is driving significant transformations within the global transport and logistics sectors. As technology advances, the potential for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to reshape civil aviation, particularly in cargo operations, has become a focal point for industry leaders.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, defense industry expert Yusuf Akbaba recently highlighted that Turkey's extensive experience in developing unmanned systems could be successfully integrated into civil cargo transportation. Akbaba noted that following the rise of autonomous vehicles, the widespread use of unmanned aircraft in the civil sector is a logical next step.
A key development in this sector is the establishment of a new air cargo company by the Turkish defense giant Baykar. "Where Baykar is involved, discussions regarding unmanned technologies are natural," Akbaba stated. He emphasized that while this transition will not happen overnight, it is reasonable to expect Baykar and other local firms to work toward piloting large-scale cargo aircraft autonomously in the near future.
The expert outlined two primary approaches to achieving autonomous cargo flight: retrofitting existing piloted aircraft with artificial intelligence and advanced sensors, or designing new, purpose-built unmanned cargo planes from the ground up. Akbaba believes Turkey possesses the necessary technical infrastructure to pursue both strategies, noting that the country has significant potential for international collaboration in autonomous systems, aircraft manufacturing, and high-performance engine development.
However, regulatory hurdles remain a significant challenge. The integration of unmanned aircraft into shared civil airspace and the complex safety certification processes required for flights over populated areas are sensitive, long-term endeavors. Despite these challenges, Turkey's robust technical and manufacturing capabilities position it to become a major global player in the evolving field of autonomous aviation.
The global shift toward autonomous logistics is part of a broader trend in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where AI-driven automation aims to increase efficiency and reduce human error in supply chain management. Turkey's entry into this market builds upon its established reputation as a leading drone manufacturer, a status solidified by the international success of its defense-grade UAV platforms.
