President Ilham Aliyev has shared a message on his social media accounts in observance of August 1 – Azerbaijan Alphabet and Azerbaijan Language Day.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the statement emphasizes the global significance of the Azerbaijani language, noting that it serves as the mother tongue for more than 50 million people worldwide.
“We are the guardians of a clean, pure, and literary Azerbaijani language—the independent state of Azerbaijan,” the President stated in his message.
In light of this commitment to linguistic preservation, the Institute of Linguistics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has developed a comprehensive new action plan. This initiative aims to safeguard the purity of the national language and ensure adherence to literary norms across public and media discourse. The Institute is expected to outline specific mechanisms for monitoring linguistic standards in the near future.
Azerbaijan Alphabet and Azerbaijan Language Day was established by a decree signed by National Leader Heydar Aliyev on August 9, 2001. The date commemorates the transition to the Latin-based Azerbaijani alphabet, a pivotal reform that strengthened the country's cultural identity and integration into the global information space.
