A US appeals court has rejected a request by Meta and TikTok to dismiss thousands of lawsuits alleging that the design of their platforms causes harm to users. The ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battles facing major social media companies in the United States.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited international media reports, the appeals court determined that the technology companies had filed their appeal at an premature stage of the litigation process. The court emphasized that the US Communications Decency Act, which generally shields social media companies from legal liability for content created by users, is intended as a defense against liability rather than a mechanism to halt legal proceedings at this preliminary stage.

The legal landscape surrounding social media liability has become increasingly complex in the US. Thousands of plaintiffs have filed lawsuits claiming that the addictive design features of platforms owned by Meta and TikTok have negatively impacted users, particularly regarding mental health. This decision follows previous legal precedents, including a case where a jury found Meta and YouTube partially responsible for affecting the mental health of certain users, resulting in a $6 million compensation order. As these cases proceed, the tech industry faces heightened scrutiny regarding platform design and user safety protocols.
