As of 11:00 AM on May 22, rainy weather conditions continue across most parts of Azerbaijan, with snow reported in the high-altitude areas of Shahdag.
The National Hydrometeorological Service informed the Operative Information Center-OMM that precipitation has been intense and heavy in various regions. In Shahdag, the snowfall resulted in a snow cover height of 1 centimeter.
According to official data, the amount of precipitation reached 47 mm in Qax (Saribash), 41 mm in Zagatala, 35 mm in Qusar (Laza), 27 mm in Sheki (Kishchay), 21 mm in Dashkasan, 17 mm in Balakan, 16 mm in Oguz, and 15 mm in Shahdag. Other regions, including Gadabay, Ismayilli, Naftalan, and Nakhchivan, recorded between 5 and 14 mm. In Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, as well as in liberated territories such as Shusha, Khankendi, Kalbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, and Fuzuli, precipitation levels were recorded between 1 and 2 mm.
The Shahdag mountain range, where the snow was recorded, is home to Azerbaijan's premier winter tourism complex and sits at an elevation of over 4,200 meters above sea level in the Greater Caucasus. While snowfall in late May is less common for the lowlands, it is a frequent occurrence in Azerbaijan's high-altitude alpine zones, reflecting the country's diverse climatic zones which range from subtropical to alpine tundra. These weather patterns are closely monitored by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to manage water resources and agricultural planning.
