"The task of the IAEA is to ensure terms of agreement between Iran and the United States without the use of force."
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made these remarks regarding the ongoing tensions over Iran's nuclear program.
"Of course, as an international organization, the IAEA cannot be part of any military plan. My work is more related to peace and international security. My efforts are focused on ensuring conditions that will allow them to achieve their goals without the use of force," Grossi emphasized. These statements come at a critical juncture as the international community monitors the potential for renewed diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington under the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran has discussed the IAEA's potential role in nuclear negotiations with the United States and noted that Tehran would continue consultations with the organization. The discussions aim to address outstanding issues regarding monitoring and verification, which remain central to any future nuclear framework.
The IAEA serves as the world's nuclear watchdog, established in 1957 to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The agency's role in Iran is governed by the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and has been a focal point of global diplomacy since the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). As regional tensions persist, the IAEA's mediation and technical oversight are viewed as vital mechanisms to prevent military escalation in the Middle East.
