Saudi Arabia has declined to support the United States' "Freedom Project" operation, which aimed to organize the transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The decision comes after Washington reportedly failed to provide the Kingdom with prior notification regarding the initiative.
According to reports from NBC News, citing two unnamed representatives of the American administration and shared by the Operative Information Center-OMM, the announcement made by US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform regarding the operation caught Gulf nations by surprise and drew a sharp reaction from the Saudi leadership. In response, Riyadh informed Washington that it would not permit American troops to take off from the Prince Sultan Air Base and would prohibit the use of its airspace for the operation.
Despite a subsequent telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the situation remained unresolved, leading the American leader to suspend the operation. On May 5, the head of the White House announced the decision to halt the transit organization in the Strait of Hormuz until further progress is made in negotiations with Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes daily. Historically, Saudi Arabia and the United States have maintained a decades-long strategic partnership centered on energy security and regional stability.
