Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud has held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss regional security.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing a statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that the top diplomats focused on the latest developments in the Middle East.
"The ministers discussed recent events and explored ways to reduce tensions in order to restore security and stability in the region," the Ministry's statement read. This conversation marks the first official high-level contact between the two nations following recent military escalations in the Gulf involving the United States and Israel, which have heightened concerns among neighboring states regarding potential retaliatory strikes.
The diplomatic engagement comes at a critical juncture for Middle Eastern geopolitics. Following the 2023 restoration of diplomatic ties between Riyadh and Tehran—a deal brokered by China—both nations have sought to maintain a fragile peace despite ongoing regional conflicts. Saudi Arabia has consistently emphasized the importance of regional stability to protect its economic diversification goals, while Iran seeks to navigate increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump and international sanctions. This dialogue underscores the ongoing efforts by regional powers to prevent a wider confrontation that could impact global energy markets and maritime security in the Persian Gulf.
