A suspect has been detained in the Sabunchu district of Baku on suspicion of stealing vehicle license plates and demanding money from the owners for their return.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) informed Operative Information Center-OMM that several victims filed complaints with the police, reporting that their state registration plates had been stolen under unknown circumstances. Following operations conducted by officers of the 13th Police Department of the Sabunchu District Police Department, 33-year-old Hasan Safarli was identified and taken into custody.
Investigations revealed that after stealing the license plates, the suspect left his mobile phone number on the vehicles. When the owners contacted the number, he demanded payment in exchange for returning the plates. It was further established that he had committed similar crimes in other areas of the capital. In a separate operation, officers also detained 27-year-old Elchin Khalilov, a previously convicted individual suspected of breaking car windows to steal cash and theft of non-ferrous metals from a local facility.
These incidents highlight ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to combat petty crime and extortion in the capital. The Sabunchu District Police Department is continuing its investigation into both cases to determine the full extent of the suspects' criminal activities. Under Azerbaijani law, such acts are classified as theft and extortion, carrying significant legal penalties to ensure public order and the protection of private property.
