Russia and Ukraine have successfully completed a prisoner exchange, resulting in the release of 103 military personnel from each side. The operation was facilitated through the mediation efforts of the United Arab Emirates.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the exchange involved the return of 103 Russian soldiers currently stationed in Belarus, in return for 103 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Reports indicate that Yana Lantratova, Russia's High Commissioner for Human Rights, was present to oversee the process. The released Russian soldiers are receiving necessary psychological and medical assistance before being transferred to medical facilities under the Russian Ministry of Defense for further treatment and rehabilitation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the exchange on social media, noting that the 103 soldiers returned to Ukraine had served across various frontline sectors. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the teams involved in the negotiation process and reiterated the government's commitment to securing the return of all captured personnel.
Prisoner exchanges have become a recurring, albeit complex, aspect of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While diplomatic channels remain strained, third-party mediators, particularly the United Arab Emirates, have played a pivotal role in facilitating these humanitarian swaps, which serve as rare instances of cooperation between the two warring nations.
