The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) is scheduled to hold a meeting on February 25 to review the membership status of Ramiz Mehdiyev following serious criminal allegations.

According to information obtained by the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Presidium of ANAS will convene tomorrow to discuss two primary agenda items. The first and most significant issue is the formal expulsion of Ramiz Mehdiyev from his position as a full member (academician) of the academy.

The second item on the meeting's agenda involves the presentation and review of the ANAS annual report, detailing the institution's scientific and administrative activities over the past year.

The move for expulsion follows a high-profile investigation launched by the State Security Service (SSS). Ramiz Mehdiyev faces several grave charges under the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, including Article 278.1 (forcible seizure of power), Article 274 (high treason), and Article 193-1.3.2 (legalization of property obtained by crime). He is currently under house arrest as the legal proceedings continue.

The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, established in 1945, serves as the primary state body conducting and coordinating research in the fields of natural and social sciences in Azerbaijan. Membership in the academy is considered one of the highest honors for scholars in the country. The potential expulsion of a former high-ranking official and academician marks a significant development in the ongoing judicial and administrative reforms within the nation's scientific leadership.
