Azerbaijan plans to reach 8 gigawatts (GW) of solar, wind, and hydropower capacity by 2032, President Ilham Aliyev announced. Speaking at the Azerbaijan-Latvia business forum in Baku on April 22, the head of state emphasized that this target is not merely an intention but is based on signed, legally binding contracts, making the goal entirely realistic.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the strategic shift in the country's energy policy during his address. “We will largely replace the natural gas we use for electricity production with renewable energy. This will allow us to save several billion cubic meters of gas, which is currently in high demand on international markets,” the President of Azerbaijan stated.
Azerbaijan has been rapidly diversifying its energy portfolio to transition from a traditional fossil fuel producer to a major regional hub for green energy. The country's renewable energy potential is particularly high in the liberated territories of Garabagh and East Zangezur, which have been officially declared "green energy zones." Furthermore, the Caspian Sea's offshore wind potential is estimated at 157 GW, positioning Azerbaijan as a key contributor to Europe's energy security through the development of the Green Energy Corridor.
