Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a telephone conversation with Portugal's Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, on April 1 to discuss the expansion of bilateral ties. During the call, the Portuguese side officially announced its decision to upgrade the status of its diplomatic representation in Azerbaijan and establish a full-fledged embassy in the capital.
According to the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement to Operative Information Center-OMM, the ministers reviewed the current state and future prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Portugal. Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed his gratitude for the decision to open an embassy, noting that it marks a significant milestone in strengthening diplomatic bonds. The two officials also discussed regional and international security issues, emphasizing the importance of political consultation mechanisms and high-level mutual visits to drive the bilateral agenda forward.
The expansion of diplomatic relations between Baku and Lisbon is expected to provide a robust framework for deepening cooperation in key sectors, including economy, energy, trade, transport, and tourism. Azerbaijan, as a pivotal energy supplier to Europe and a central hub in the Middle Corridor transport route, offers strategic opportunities for Portuguese enterprises. Furthermore, both ministers expressed concern over the rising military escalation in the Middle East, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts and reaffirming their commitment to mutual support within international organizations.
