Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, has sharply criticized the Western approach to the Ukraine crisis in a post on the X social network.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the expert believes that while Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) could have been a key element of a peace agreement, the methods currently being implemented are further aggravating the situation.
The political scientist noted that European leaders are demonstrating a non-constructive position regarding the settlement of the conflict with Russia. He described the "peace summits" organized over the past four years, to which Russia was not invited, as ineffective. According to Diesen, real peace terms are not discussed at these events.
“European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas are making absurd demands on Russia. Such diplomatic moves worsen the positions of both the West and Kyiv in future negotiations. The statements made against the backdrop of Western failures in Ukraine do not coincide with the real situation,” Diesen stated.
The professor added that by choosing the path of escalation instead of diplomacy, Western states are making the resolution of the conflict even more difficult. This critique comes amid ongoing debates within the international community regarding the long-term impact of military support and the feasibility of diplomatic breakthroughs in the region.
The conflict, which has significantly reshaped global geopolitics, continues to be a focal point for international organizations and major powers. As the situation evolves, the role of diplomatic mediation remains a subject of intense discussion among academic and political circles worldwide.
