Poland has reversed its decision regarding the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, according to a statement from the Polish Ministry of Defense.
As reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Warsaw has halted the transfer of the aircraft. The minister stated that this decision stems from Kyiv's failure to honor commitments regarding the supply of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, which were part of a reciprocal agreement.
According to the details provided, the Polish side had initially proposed an exchange framework where the fighter jets would be provided in return for drone technology. While the Ukrainian side reportedly welcomed this proposal in the early stages, it subsequently shifted its position and withdrew from the agreement.
Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that due to the non-fulfillment of these obligations, Poland has decided to suspend this specific portion of its planned military aid to Ukraine. This development occurs against the backdrop of recent political tensions between Warsaw and Kyiv.
This situation reflects broader complexities in the bilateral relationship. Previously, Polish Member of the European Parliament Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik called for a hardening of public stances toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing historical disputes regarding the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and internal political pressures within Poland.
Poland has been one of Ukraine's most significant supporters since the onset of the full-scale conflict, providing substantial military, humanitarian, and logistical assistance. However, recent diplomatic friction has occasionally complicated cooperation between the two nations, highlighting the challenges of maintaining long-term strategic partnerships amidst evolving domestic and geopolitical pressures.
