Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a statement regarding the ongoing dynamics of Tehran's relationship with the United States and the potential for future diplomatic negotiations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Pezeshkian addressed these issues during the "Today's Women, Tomorrow's Iran" event held in Tehran. He emphasized that Iran's primary objective is not war, but the preservation of the country's territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
The President stated that Tehran is not averse to establishing a dialogue with the United States; however, he stressed that any such negotiations must be conducted based on national interests and clearly defined principles. Pezeshkian noted that Iran will proceed cautiously, prioritizing "wisdom, dignity, and national interests" throughout any discussion process.
Key objectives for potential talks with the U.S. include the lifting of economic sanctions, the release of blocked financial assets, and reaching a sustainable agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program.
Pezeshkian explicitly rejected the notion that engaging in negotiations equates to surrender. Citing the experience of China, he argued that nations can demonstrate their strength through economic competition and development rather than isolation. He reiterated that national defense, public service, and the strengthening of national identity remain the core priorities of the Iranian state.
The relationship between Tehran and Washington has remained strained for decades, characterized by deep-seated geopolitical disagreements and extensive economic sanctions. Diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), have faced significant hurdles, making any potential shift in rhetoric a subject of close international observation.
