Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has selected a new candidate for the position of speaker of the country's future parliament. According to reports, the head of government intends to nominate Lilit Makunts, who previously served as Armenia's ambassador to the United States, for the high-ranking legislative post.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Armenian media outlets, reports that Pashinyan is actively working to ensure Makunts receives the highest possible support during internal party voting. The "Hraparak" newspaper noted that the "Civil Contract" party is scheduled to hold a congress on February 15, where the official election list will be approved.
The next parliamentary elections in Armenia are slated for June 2026. This move is seen as part of Pashinyan's broader strategy to consolidate his political team ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle. Lilit Makunts, a close ally of the Prime Minister, previously led the "My Step" faction in parliament before her diplomatic appointment to Washington, D.C. The restructuring of the party leadership comes amid ongoing political shifts within the Armenian government as it prepares for the next nationwide vote.
