Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will not participate in the upcoming summit of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) scheduled to take place in Astana on May 28-29.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Armenian media reports, Pashinyan personally confirmed his absence from the high-level meeting. The Prime Minister stated that he has already informed Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev regarding his decision. Pashinyan attributed his absence to his involvement in an ongoing election campaign, a justification similar to the one provided for his non-attendance at the May 9 parade earlier this month.
The Eurasian Economic Union, which became fully operational in 2015, is a regional economic integration bloc comprising Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. Pashinyan's decision to skip the summit comes at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding Armenia's foreign policy direction and its commitment to Moscow-led regional organizations. This diplomatic move is seen by experts as part of a broader trend of Yerevan distancing itself from certain collective initiatives within the post-Soviet space while navigating complex domestic political challenges and regional security dynamics.
