Air defense systems intercepted and destroyed more than 20 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting Erbil, Iraq, during a massive overnight attack attempt. The drones were neutralized before reaching their intended targets, preventing potential damage to the city.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing local media, that Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw issued an official statement regarding the incident. The Governor emphasized that there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the attempted strikes.
"Air defense systems were actively involved in the operation to intercept the UAVs. This coordinated response ensured that the attack was completely thwarted," Khoshnaw stated. Local sources noted that the explosions heard across the Erbil province were the result of the drones being intercepted in mid-air.
Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, has frequently been a focal point for regional tensions and security incidents. The city hosts significant diplomatic missions and international coalition forces, making its airspace a high-priority zone for advanced air defense monitoring. This latest escalation follows a pattern of increasing drone activity in the region, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by local and international authorities in maintaining stability in northern Iraq.
