A flight scheduled to depart from Victoria International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport was grounded after a young passenger refused to fasten their seatbelt and repeatedly stood up in their seat.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the incident disrupted standard safety protocols required for takeoff.
Airline spokesperson Brad Cicero stated that despite extensive efforts by the child's parent and the cabin crew to ensure compliance, the child remained uncooperative. Consequently, the pilot was forced to taxi the aircraft back from the runway to the terminal.
The process of returning to the terminal, deplaning the passengers, and offloading luggage caused significant delays. Because Victoria International Airport enforces a strict curfew, closing its runway at 12:30 a.m., the airline was unable to complete the flight within the allotted time, leading to a full cancellation of the service.
Cicero confirmed that the aircraft eventually departed for Toronto the following afternoon. Aviation safety regulations strictly mandate that all passengers, including children, must be securely fastened during taxi, takeoff, and landing to prevent injury in the event of turbulence or emergency maneuvers.
