Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has announced his support for the country's participation in the United States-led maritime security mission in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the president made this statement during an address on Thursday. Nauseda noted that he intends to submit the initiative to Lithuania's State Defense Council for formal discussion and approval.

The mission aims to ensure the safety of maritime navigation and protect vital international trade routes in the region. According to official sources, the decision aligns with Lithuania's commitment to international security cooperation and the preservation of freedom of navigation in strategic waterways.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes. US President Donald Trump has previously emphasized the importance of international coalitions in securing these waters against potential threats. The initiative, often referred to as the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC), seeks to provide surveillance and protection for merchant vessels traversing the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
