NATO intends to deploy additional forces to Europe's eastern flank following a recent incident in which a drone struck the roof of a residential building in Romania.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this statement was made by the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.
"NATO is already taking steps to strengthen the eastern flank. Yes, we are organizing this," he noted.
The Admiral added that the alliance aims to establish a unified defense system stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. While he did not provide specific details regarding the composition of the forces or the technical specifications of the proposed system, he emphasized that NATO is actively evaluating and implementing the most effective countermeasures without disclosing operational specifics.
The context of this announcement follows a security incident on May 29, when the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that a drone had crashed onto the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galati. Bucharest has attributed the incident to Russia, raising concerns about regional security and the integrity of NATO's borders.
NATO's eastern flank, which includes member states bordering Russia and Belarus, has been a primary focus of the alliance's strategic adjustments since the escalation of regional tensions. The alliance has consistently sought to enhance its deterrence and defense posture in the region through increased troop rotations, enhanced air policing, and integrated surveillance capabilities.
