Iranian citizens currently in Iraq have launched a mass assault on the United States Embassy in Baghdad, following reports of the death of Iran's Supreme Leader.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Tasnim News Agency, that protesters breached the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad—an area housing diplomatic missions and international organizations—to target the American diplomatic compound.
The unrest follows a significant military escalation on February 28, when the United States and Israel initiated joint military operations against Iran, conducting airstrikes across several cities in the republic. These strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including the country's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The Green Zone, where the incident occurred, is a 10-square-kilometer area in central Baghdad that has historically served as the center of international presence in Iraq. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has maintained a firm stance on regional security and the protection of diplomatic personnel. This latest breach represents a critical escalation in Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions, prompting increased security measures across the region's diplomatic corridors.
