The construction of the Rasht–Astara railway line is set to commence in the near future, marking a significant step forward for regional connectivity.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing "Azad Iran," the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, Jabbar Ali Zakeri, confirmed that work will begin immediately following the completion of land acquisition processes along the designated route.

The 162-kilometer Rasht–Astara railway serves as a vital link within the "North–South" International Transport Corridor. This strategic project is designed to connect Iran's southern ports with the railway networks of the South Caucasus, Russia, and Europe, facilitating more efficient trade routes across the region.

In 2023, Russia and Iran finalized an agreement for the joint construction of this 162-kilometer section between Iran and Azerbaijan, which will provide a direct rail link to Persian Gulf ports. The project, valued at 1.6 billion euros, involves joint financing from Moscow and Tehran for design, construction, and the procurement of necessary goods and services. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce transit times and boost economic cooperation between the participating nations.
