The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a formal warning to its citizens regarding the risk of detention and extradition to the United States when traveling to several foreign countries, including Armenia.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Russian media reports, notes that Grigory Lukyantsev, a department director at the Russian MFA, emphasized that Russian nationals must be aware of the legal risks posed by third-country agreements with Washington. According to the official, the list of high-risk jurisdictions where Russian citizens face potential arrest at the request of US authorities includes Armenia, most of Europe and Latin America, as well as Australia, Canada, Israel, the Maldives, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and Morocco.
This development comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions and an increasing number of legal cases involving the extradition of Russian nationals to the United States on various charges. The inclusion of Armenia in this list is particularly significant given its historical security ties with Russia, signaling a shift in the perceived safety of Russian citizens within the territories of regional partners. The warning serves as a cautionary measure for travelers to evaluate the legal implications of visiting countries that maintain active extradition treaties with the US government, currently led by US President Donald Trump.
