Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has introduced specialized software to record the keyboard and mouse movements of its employees to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to internal company correspondence, this move is part of an initiative to create AI agents capable of performing work tasks autonomously.

The company aims to improve the AI's proficiency in using keyboard shortcuts and navigating menus by utilizing a tool called the "Model Capability Initiative" (MCI). Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated that the collected data would not be used to monitor employee performance and would not include sensitive content. He noted that if agents are being created to help people perform daily tasks, the models require real-world usage examples.

However, legal experts emphasize that such tracking could create serious legislative problems in Europe, particularly in Italy and Germany. These innovations are occurring against the backdrop of mass layoffs at technology giants such as Meta, Amazon, and Google.

Meta's push into autonomous AI agents reflects a broader trend among global technology leaders to integrate generative AI more deeply into workplace productivity. As competition intensifies with rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft, companies are increasingly seeking ways to automate routine digital workflows. This development highlights the growing tension between rapid AI advancement and the stringent data privacy regulations established by the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
