A university in Mexico’s Morelos state has held a memorial ceremony for 21-year-old Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte, who was killed in the state.
Students gathered on Monday, Sept. 14, to light candles and lay flowers. According to the state prosecutor’s office, Tacoronte was killed less than a month after arriving in Morelos as part of an exchange program.
The memorial was held outside the Faculty of Education Sciences at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), where she had been studying.
Investigation continues
Spain’s consulate in Mexico met with Morelos Governor Margarita Gonzalez following the student’s death. The state government expressed its condolences to Tacoronte’s family and said it was ready to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Authorities are investigating the case as femicide. In Mexico, the term is used for killings of women in which gender-related motives are suspected.
Fourth femicide case involving a UAEM student in 2026
Tacoronte’s death is the fourth femicide case involving UAEM students reported this year. The deaths of Kimberly Joselin Ramos and Karol Toledo, whose bodies were found after they went missing in March, sparked protests within the university community.
According to Mexican media reports, students occupied one of the campuses for several weeks, demanding stronger security measures and justice for the victims.
Concern over violence against women
Official figures show that 21 femicides were recorded in Morelos between January and July this year. A total of 380 femicides were registered nationwide during the same period.
The incident has renewed calls from students and activists for better protection of women at universities and tougher measures against gender-based violence.
