The Media Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MEDIA) has issued a formal call to Meta regarding the circulation of deepfake videos on the Facebook social media platform featuring fabricated statements attributed to President Ilham Aliyev.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the agency reported that these disinformation materials, created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, do not reflect reality and are designed to mislead public opinion. The primary objective of such cyber-fraud is to seize citizens' personal data and cause financial damage through deceptive schemes.

"We call on Meta, the owner of the Facebook platform, to take prompt and operative measures to remove this harmful content," the statement from the Media Development Agency said. The agency further urged the public to rely only on official sources of information and called upon journalists and social activists to remain vigilant against the growing trend of deepfake technology and false information campaigns.

Deepfake technology uses sophisticated AI and machine learning to create realistic but entirely fabricated video and audio recordings. In Azerbaijan, the Media Development Agency was established to increase the professionalism of the media environment and protect the information space from disinformation. This incident highlights the increasing global challenge of AI-driven cybercrime, where malicious actors impersonate high-ranking officials to conduct phishing attacks or spread political misinformation.
