Malaysia is experiencing a significant surge in dengue fever cases, with the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the surrounding Klang Valley region identified as the primary epicenters of the outbreak.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, statistics released by the Ministry of Health on Friday indicate that 58,079 cases have been recorded since the beginning of August. This represents a 56.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Health officials have confirmed that at least 55 people have died due to complications from the virus.

Official data highlights that the most dramatic spikes occurred in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, where infection rates have more than doubled compared to the corresponding period in 2025. Meanwhile, in the densely populated Selangor state, cases have risen by 61 percent. The Ministry notes that the infection is concentrated in the urbanized Klang Valley, though the outbreak is spreading nationwide, with cases in the northern Perlis state surging by 207 percent and the southern Johor state by 109 percent.

Dengue fever is a viral infection primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. These insects thrive in urban environments, breeding rapidly in small, stagnant water collections often found in discarded containers or poorly maintained residential areas. Health experts attribute the current spike to unstable weather patterns, specifically the combination of heavy rainfall and high temperatures, which create ideal breeding grounds for the vectors.

In response to the crisis, authorities have intensified control measures, focusing on early detection and aggressive mosquito eradication campaigns. Citizens are strongly advised to eliminate stagnant water sources around their homes and strictly adhere to hygiene protocols to curb the spread of the disease.
