France has deployed the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean Sea following recent security escalations in the region.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing France 24, that French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the immediate relocation of the flagship and its strike group from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean.

"Given this volatile situation and the uncertainty of the coming days, I have ordered the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, its air group, and escort vessels to sail to the Mediterranean," Macron stated. He further noted that Rafale fighter jets have also been deployed in the Middle East over the past few hours to bolster regional security.

The decision follows a drone attack on a British airbase in Cyprus on March 2. President Macron emphasized that Cyprus is a fellow European Union member with which France maintains a strategic partnership agreement. The deployment is seen as a move to project power and ensure the stability of EU partners in the Eastern Mediterranean amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The Charles de Gaulle is the flagship of the French Navy and the largest warship in Western Europe. As the only nuclear-powered carrier completed outside of the United States Navy, it serves as a critical tool for French power projection and maritime security operations globally. This strategic redeployment highlights France's commitment to Mediterranean security and its readiness to respond to threats against allied infrastructure and sovereign territories.
