Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has filed a formal petition with a United States court seeking the dismissal of criminal charges against him, citing procedural violations and constitutional concerns.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing RIA Novosti, that the legal motion challenges the validity of the ongoing prosecution following his extradition to the United States. The petition emphasizes that the legal proceedings have allegedly infringed upon the leader's fundamental rights.

The filed document states: "President Maduro respectfully requests this court to dismiss the criminal prosecution against him." The Venezuelan leader further asserted that actions taken by US authorities have violated his constitutional rights and compromised the integrity of the judicial process. Maduro's defense team argued that Caracas is currently unable to cover the costs of legal defense, adding that "the actions of the US government violate not only Maduro's rights but also the court's duty to ensure a fair trial."

This legal development comes during a period of significant geopolitical shifts. It is noteworthy that US President Donald Trump, who assumed office in January 2025, has maintained a rigorous stance on international law enforcement and diplomatic relations. The case against Maduro involves long-standing allegations related to narco-terrorism and corruption, which have been a focal point of US-Venezuela relations for several years. The outcome of this motion is expected to have substantial implications for the diplomatic landscape between Washington and Caracas.
