Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened an emergency meeting of the Defense Council on Sunday following the discovery of powerful explosives near a pipeline transporting Russian gas through Serbia to Hungary.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the incident has triggered a high-level security response in both Budapest and Belgrade. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on his Instagram account that the explosives, described as having significant destructive power, were located in the Kanjiza region near the Hungarian border.

The discovery comes just days before national elections in Hungary, significantly escalating regional political tensions. Speaking to Reuters, former intelligence officials suggested the incident could be a "false flag" operation intended to influence the upcoming vote. Opposition leader Peter Magyar also expressed skepticism regarding the timing and nature of the discovery. Following the Defense Council meeting, Prime Minister Orban stated that the explosives were part of a planned sabotage attempt against the pipeline network that delivers Russian gas to Central and Eastern Europe via the Balkans. He further noted that the Russian section of the TurkStream pipeline has also faced persistent military threats.

The head of Serbian military intelligence claimed that the seized explosives were of US manufacture. However, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected these allegations on the X platform, suggesting instead that the incident could be a Russian attempt to interfere in the Hungarian electoral process. In response to the threat, both Hungary and Serbia have significantly increased security measures around critical energy infrastructure to ensure the continued flow of natural gas.

Energy security remains a critical issue for Central Europe, particularly for landlocked nations like Hungary that rely heavily on the Balkan stream for their energy needs. The TurkStream pipeline, which bypasses Ukraine to deliver gas from Russia to Turkey and onward to Southern and Central Europe, has become a focal point of geopolitical friction since the escalation of regional conflicts. Ensuring the integrity of this infrastructure is considered a matter of national security for the Republic of Azerbaijan's regional partners, as energy diversification and transit stability remain pillars of European economic stability.
