Lebanese and Israeli officials are preparing for a fifth round of negotiations to be held in Washington. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the primary objective of the parties is to resolve the ongoing security crisis in the region and establish a concrete timeline for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.

While Lebanese officials maintain that direct dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving the conflict, the previous four rounds of talks held since April have yielded no tangible results. The discussions are taking place against the backdrop of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. Although this agreement has reportedly fostered relative calm along the front lines, the Lebanese government has emphasized that Tehran cannot speak on behalf of the country, a position reiterated by President Joseph Aoun and other officials.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah continues to view Iran as its primary mediator and has urged the Lebanese government to refrain from direct contact with Israel. Conversely, Israeli government spokesperson David Menser stated that Tel Aviv’s core objective remains the disarmament of Hezbollah and the signing of a long-term peace treaty with Lebanon. However, reports suggest that Israeli officials have signaled that troops may remain in southern Lebanon for an indefinite period.

The current negotiations are part of a long-standing diplomatic effort to stabilize the volatile border region between Lebanon and Israel. Analysts, including Karim Safieddine of the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, suggest that without a fundamental shift in the positions of the involved parties, significant progress in the upcoming Washington meetings remains unlikely. The complexity of the situation is further compounded by Israel's reported dissatisfaction with the US-Iran agreement, which experts believe may lead to a more rigid stance from the Israeli delegation during the talks.
