The National Crisis Management Center of Lithuania has announced that an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that crashed on the country's territory may have been launched by Ukraine.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media reports, the center's director, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, told reporters that preliminary investigations provide grounds for this assumption. "According to initial data, what we see in the wreckage is most likely a Ukrainian drone," Vitkauskas emphasized.
The UAV was reportedly destroyed at the scene, where emergency and security personnel continue to operate. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated that the use of the country's airspace for military purposes is unacceptable. The President underscored that any foreign drones entering Lithuanian airspace would be intercepted and shot down to ensure national security.
Lithuania, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has been on high alert regarding its airspace security since the escalation of regional tensions. The Baltic nation has consistently advocated for strengthened air defense capabilities along NATO's eastern flank. This incident highlights the increasing complexities of monitoring drone activity in the region, where various types of surveillance and combat UAVs are frequently deployed in the context of ongoing regional conflicts.
