Konqoda Ebola epidemiyası genişlənir: 1000-dən çox yoluxma, yüzlərlə ölüm

The current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed the 1,000-case threshold for the first time. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the number of confirmed infections has reached 1,048, with the death toll standing at 267.

Experts emphasize that these figures represent the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic in African history during its initial phase. Reports citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that the number of infections recorded during the first month of the epidemic is a record high for the continent.

Health officials suspect that the virus was circulating months before its official declaration on May 15, allowing it to spread undetected. The situation is further complicated by the virus reaching densely populated refugee camps in the eastern part of the country. According to figures released at a WHO briefing, at least 25 cases have been confirmed in these camps, resulting in 14 deaths. Aid agencies warn that the presence of the virus among vulnerable populations suffering from conflict and displacement could drastically accelerate transmission rates.

The impact of the Ebola virus is now extending beyond the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Neighboring Uganda has also reported cases, with the total number of infections in the country reaching 20. Ugandan officials state that the majority of patients are arrivals from the Congo, highlighting the risk of cross-border transmission.

Meanwhile, efforts to combat the epidemic have sparked regional tensions. In Kenya, the construction of an Ebola quarantine center near a U.S.-supported military base was halted by a court order. Despite legal disputes surrounding the project, which triggered local protests, aircraft transporting medical equipment and personnel continue to arrive in the area.

Ebola, or Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. It is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. The ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains a significant public health challenge, requiring coordinated international intervention to contain the spread and provide necessary medical support to affected regions.
