What was discussed at the first meeting of the Personal Names Commission?
The first meeting of the Personal Names Commission, operating under the Terminology Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has been held at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the newly formed commission focused on the systematization of names based on scientific principles during the session.
Professor Nadir Mammadli, Director of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics and Chairman of the Personal Names Commission, stated that the commission's future activities will involve significant steps toward the scientific classification of personal names and the determination of correct spelling norms in Azerbaijan.
Furthermore, the commission plans to prevent the use of accidental or artificial names that do not comply with the internal linguistic patterns of the Azerbaijani language. It was noted that protecting the national name fund, enriching it, and reintroducing forgotten names with historical traditions will be among the Commission's primary objectives.
Principles for prohibited names and the creation of new names
The action plan for the Personal Names Commission was unveiled during the meeting. Discussions covered topical issues such as the commission's goals and functions, the classification of Azerbaijani personal names, and problems regarding spelling and transliteration.
Participants also exchanged views on prohibited or undesirable names, principles for creating new names, the development of a normative dictionary, and the establishment of an open digital platform for public use.
Orthography of names and rules for using "bey" and "khan" titles
Rashida Manafova, head of the Registration Department of the Ministry of Justice, drew particular attention to the use of titles such as "bey" and "khan" within personal names. She raised the issue of how these names are currently spelled and pronounced among citizens in Azerbaijan.
Commission members shared their views on the origin of common names in the country and their compliance with linguistic norms. Special focus was placed on ensuring that newly proposed names align with the orthographic norms of the Azerbaijani language.
The Personal Names Commission serves as a regulatory body to ensure that naming conventions reflect the cultural, historical, and linguistic identity of Azerbaijan. By standardizing these processes, the government aims to maintain linguistic purity while providing clear guidelines for the Ministry of Justice during the civil registration of newborns. The public will be regularly updated on the commission's strategic tasks and upcoming measures.
