A public state of emergency has been declared in the Tolima region of Colombia due to severe forest fires that have ravaged the area.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the wildfires have destroyed at least 50,000 hectares of land, with 28,000 hectares identified as critical agricultural and livestock grazing grounds.
Regional official De la Espriella stated that more than 2,660 producers have been directly impacted by the disaster. Preliminary estimates place the economic losses at over 134 billion pesos. Furthermore, 163,000 head of livestock are facing severe shortages of feed and water, while 23 municipalities and 507 rural settlements have reported significant damage.
Authorities have raised serious concerns that the majority of the fires were started intentionally. De la Espriella noted that technical reports suggest the blazes were ignited with the specific intent to damage the agricultural sector and incite fear among the local population. A special investigative task force has been established to identify the perpetrators, with the government offering a reward of up to 50 million pesos (approximately $16,000) for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
Currently, 205 firefighters and numerous technical personnel are engaged in containment efforts. However, authorities have reported instances of individuals actively obstructing firefighting operations, with reports of motorcyclists deliberately reigniting blazes in the Suarez, Coello, and San Luis areas.
The government is preparing a comprehensive recovery plan to address the economic and ecological impact once the fires are fully extinguished. De la Espriella emphasized that the state remains committed to supporting local producers and restoring the region's agricultural capacity.
